April 6th-Mekong River Delta

The Mekong River originates in Tibet and extends approximately 3,000 miles, the last 200 of which run through Vietnam. The people in this river delta area depend on the waterways for their entire existence. Fishing, trading, farming- irrigation and  tourism support the residents. I was impressed to find out that a Mekong Ecological Committee has been established to preserve the special catfish that were almost eradicated by the lower and irregular tides created by China's up-river dam building. Since, there has been cooperation on this issue. At 90 degrees and 90% humidity, we received a free sauna with our excursion. It made me realize, more immediately, what it must have been like for our troops in full uniform, laden with equipment, forced to fight a largely unidentifiable "enemy."  Again, the crazy irony evolving out of this developing country is that now fellow passengers, bringing tourist dollars, are the new Vietnamese "Boat People."

These faces are irresistible
