It's been a very strange feeling for both G & I to actually step onto this piece of our earth where such serious and controversial current events occupied our early adulthood.Vietnam along with Laos and Cambodia make up what we know as "IndoChina." Vietnam's history is rife with warlords, always breaking around that imaginary line of north and south. Even 100 years of French colonial rule, contributing some beautifully delicate architecture didn't erase this north/south differential. I wish we could have truly understood the history of Vietnam before we championed our unsustainable destiny for their people.
Our time here, thankfully was occupied with the mystical natural beauty of Halong Bay and its colorful markets. Halong Bay is a Unesco World Heritage site and named one of the seven
new wonders of the world. The Bay has some thousands of floating homes.Generations live on water and conduct their business from their "Junks." Children attend up to fourth grade at a floating elementary school, then they join the family business.
